Serving clients since 1971, Byrne, Seligman & Company, Inc. began operations in San Carlos as Melvin L. Steiner, CPA. Mr. Steiner organized his public accounting practice to help an increasing number of individuals and businesses with their tax and accounting needs. During the next two decades the firm moved to three locations within San Carlos to accommodate its growing staff and to better serve its clients.

In 1992, Mr. Steiner retired from the practice and public accounting, and sold the firm to William Byrne, who changed the name of the company to William R. Byrne & Company, CPA. In 1998, Ronald Seligman, who had been with the firm since 1986, became a partner of the company, and the company changed its name to Byrne, Seligman & Company, Inc.

Since 1971 the firm has been constantly adding products and services to meet the diverse needs of its clients. With William Byrne’s departure in 2003, the firm sought a partner that would embrace its commitment to client services and relationships. In October, 2004, Cohen & Associates became that partner of choice, forming today's company, Byrne, Seligman & Company, Inc.
